Empowering Young Leaders to Shape the Future Through Innovation, Collaboration, and Action

The International Engineering and Technology University (METU) became the stage for a dynamic international forum titled “Global Student Leadership: Development, Impact, Action,” bringing together students, academics, and experts from over 15 countries. The event served as a vibrant platform for dialogue on the evolving role of student leadership in addressing global challenges—ranging from artificial intelligence and environmental sustainability to innovation in higher education.

Opening the forum, Rector Gulnar Sarsenbekova emphasized the power of student voices in designing the future, stressing that the event was not just a conversation but a space for action-driven solutions. Keynote speaker Dr. Nazira Boltirkova from the University of Southern California inspired participants to pursue global perspectives and take ownership of their personal and professional journeys. Her insights on leadership development and career growth resonated strongly with the diverse student audience.

Plenary sessions tackled major issues such as “Global Leadership in the Future of Education,” “Attributes of a Competitive Graduate,” and “Innovative Approaches in Science and Technology.” These discussions enabled students to reflect on their roles in shaping equitable, tech-savvy, and environmentally responsible societies.

Student Initiatives Take Center Stage in the Year of Self-Governance

Aligned with Kazakhstan’s national initiatives, METU declared the current academic year as the “Year of Student Self-Governance.” The forum provided the ideal launchpad for several student-led projects that embody leadership through action, including:

  • The launch of METU Life – a student-run magazine amplifying youth voices;
  • The introduction of a Social GPA system, redefining academic success through civic and community engagement;
  • The creation of a Book Exchange Corner to support inclusive learning;
  • New named scholarship programs supporting student achievement and initiative;
  • Student-organized construction teams promoting responsibility and practical skills.

Participants praised these initiatives as meaningful steps toward empowering students to lead within and beyond the university setting. Discussions throughout the event highlighted the value of cross-cultural collaboration, practical leadership training, and the integration of youth-led innovation into broader institutional development.

With strong international participation, impactful content, and a clear emphasis on action, the forum reinforced METU’s position as a hub for cultivating globally minded, socially engaged student leaders.
